I was brought to Bikram yoga because of a love of stretching, exercise and the heat. I had been diagnosed with spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal column) causing an inability to stand without pain. The instructors kept telling me to keep doing back bends for therapy. It was difficult at first but I kept believing it would get better. The benefits soon became apparent; weight loss, increased energy and self confidence, relaxation and better health awareness. Some changes are immediate while others are realized over time. One day I noticed my back no longer hurt. Another benefit is I’m in better shape and health than most people in my age group.
Bikram yoga is great for the beginner to jump start an exercise program or charge up an existing work out routine. It’s also therapeutic for some health conditions or previous injuries. Students work at their own pace, but are encouraged during class to perform the postures correctly to maximize the benefits. The various postures in each class continually challenge and stimulate all levels of conditioning to provide an excellent workout.
I started coming to Bikram Yoga Burlington about six months ago after many months training for a half marathon. I was in need of a new workout – preferably one that would give my aching knees a break! Bikram yoga really fulfilled what my body needed both physically and mentally. It has not only been a full body workout that has improved my strength tremendously, but has also allowed me to practice patience, acceptance, and confidence each day in class. All of the teachers are so welcoming and supportive of everyone’s experience – it’s a really positive environment that I can always rely on for friendly faces and good advice. It’s amazing how much better you feel even after one class!
I came to Bikram Burlington looking for a good workout as well as relief from arthritis and joint pain, but this yoga is so much more. The heat and the postures have been certainly been working their magic on my joints, but in addition I have noticed my body is also getting stronger and more flexible. The spine-strengthening series is gradually undoing the damage of years sitting at a desk in an office job. I’ve also been able to apply the mental focus that I’ve practiced on the mat to so many areas of my life. The more I practice, the better it gets. Ashley and her experienced team of instructors are outstanding. They provide the perfect supportive, judgement-free zone for what can be a very intimidating experience. Whether it is your first class, or you have been practicing for years, their guidance and encouragement is invaluable. I always leave the hot room feeling better than when I went in.
Ashley and her team have the patience of saints!! Based on advice from a friend, I started as a way to reduce stress and work on various health issues like low back pain and carpal tunnel. I have been practicing now for just over 16 months and no matter how frustrated I would get or how tired I was, Ashley, Billy, Diana and the whole team would work with me and point out things that I was doing well and areas where I needed to work a little more. Their support and guidance provided me with the reinforcement I needed so I sign up for a regular membership. I have noticed significant changes in my posture overall as well as a reduction in low back pain and carpal tunnel symptoms. I look forward to my sessions each week and encourage others to try it, especially those who have issues with stress and a challenge focusing. If you don’t focus in this class you won’t be successful in your postures and you will not get better. It is the much needed distraction that my racing mind needs. You will love this class and you will love the instructors!
I have always been very active doing all kind of sports since my childhood from gymnastics to running to Insanity. As result of years of high impact exercises and some accidents, I ended up with multiple issues. I had knee surgery due to a torn meniscus. I had a complication during surgery which resulted in a long term PT since after surgery I was at 40% range of motion. Later on when I got better and started cycling and eventually running, I ended up with stress fracture of my hip. After long time babying myself I got back to running again. I always ended up with residual knee or hip pain. On top of all I had back and shoulder pain due to my working condition.
I got used to taking anti-inflammatory drugs and leaving with some pain after exercising. I finally decided to try something different. I never liked the thought of yoga. I always thought of yoga as something slow and boring that you do to “center yourself”. Anyway, I went to a session of Bikram yoga at Burlington. I really did not know what to expect. I was pretty much shocked at the whole experience. During the yoga, I kept telling myself, this is crazy and I will never do this again. Once the class was finished and I changed my clothes, I felt so light and pain free. I could not believe how amazing I felt. I had a struggle in my head immediately as what to do next. Was the torture during class worth the feeling after? Absolutely. And, so I started my journey as a yogi.
I have talked to many of my friends and colleagues about Bikram yoga and many started doing it and loving it. But, the main reason many joined was when they saw how amazing I was feeling. No more need for massages, no more pain killers, PT, or complaints of aches and pains. Recently one of my colleagues started Bikram yoga in Western Mass and she said, “Until now, I never realized how off balance I am”!!
Bikram yoga is probably the best gift you can give yourself. Not only you get a work out but you see yourself in a very raw form, be it physical or emotional. You learn acceptance as well as perseverance. You meet a very unique group of people who are inspiring and whom you inspire.
My very busy schedule does not leave much quality time with my son. To solve the problem, I started taking my son with me. He started with half classes and now sometimes full classes. It is great to have him see how people struggle to better themselves, and how he has to take time away from all technological gadgets and do something good for himself.
At the Bikram yoga in Burlington, my son loves Diana and Ashley. They make him feel like he is right at home. All the yogis there, in addition to the instructors, are all so supportive and encouraging toward my son that he feels so special when he goes there and looks forward to the next time he can be there.
Three years ago I suffered terrible pain in my right elbow, it hurt to both straighten and bend it. The doctor diagnosed me with ‘golfer’s elbow’ and I was supposed to begin physical therapy…unfortunately I was in physical therapy for my knee at the same time and for insurance purposes I had to wait. I decided to take Bikram yoga classes to see if it would help ease the pain. Not only did Bikram’s yoga help with the pain, but the pain disappeared altogether. Within six weeks I had no pain in my elbow at all! My knee, as it turns out, is loaded with bone spurs and arthritis. Attending Bikram yoga classes help ease the pain and stiffness I feel daily. Sometimes, especially during the cold, winter months my knee pain limits my range of motion. I used to get frustrated with my body when my knee would limit my practice, but the instructors at Bikram Yoga Burlington have taught me to appreciate what I CAN DO each time I enter the ‘hot room’. Some days are better than others for sure but I have learned from the support of the staff to be happy with the fact that I showed up for class… It’s’ just yoga, it’s just a practice. It’s all good!
